A Radical Love a Path of Light

The Book 48 Week

The book entitled, A Radical Love a Path of Light – The Beauty and Burden of Religious Life is a book written by Fr. Joe Mannath SDB. This is a simple, straight-forward book on religious life without hiding any facts and presents challenges faced by religious today. Hence, the approach is down to earth and sincere and thought provoking. No mask has been drawn to cover up, but the author paints religious life as seen in the world today.
The book is good for personal reflection and enrichment. This is also a good book in the hand of formators and those who are involved in spiritual direction. Definitely this book will also find enough resources for conferences, talks on religious topics, and resources for group building. Indeed, this book will throw light on what religious life is all about. The canvas of religious life drawn by many may vary, but the author of this book draws the picture of religious life as seen, observed and studied. It is the real religious life that one can see, in flesh and blood!
Even a casual perusal will reveal that God wants to learn from the past and make necessary amendments for future of religious life. The founders of various congregations fashioned the religious life as they visualized it, but today we need to live in the present-day context with its challenges. We need to live it today!
The stories that are narrated almost on every page is about true situations, which will compel every reader to go through the pages after pages without getting bored or suffocated. I have read it more than once and admired the presentation and direct approach. Definitely, it can help anyone to have a glimpse of the radical love behind our commitment and make our religious life an inspiration for many. It is said that “today the leaders are watched more than listened to.” Dear reader, you are being watched! What are you waiting for, preach with your life and action!

CONSECRATED Life Called to Move Beyond

Book of 47 Week

Having met Sr Inigo in person, working together as co-workers during our service in ‘Prison Ministry India’ and listening to her talks during seminars and meetings I have personally experienced the spiritual strength and conviction by which she interacts with various groups of people, creating an impact in their lives.
She ‘walks the talk’ even before she presents to the audience. The one who listens to her or reads her book remain unyielding. She has the ability to set the hearts on fire and awaken us over again to the Spirit within so to enable one to make a ‘U’ turn in the personal life.
The book titled “Consecrated Life – Called to Move Beyond” a captivating book, authored by Sr Inigo SSA, published by Pauline Publications is ‘The Book’, every religious need to read, be challenged and dare to live an authentic Christian consecrated life.
The book is rich with Biblical references, pregnant with rich experiences of life, deep in reflections, unique in title contents and affluent with significant questions which invites one for systematic soul searching.
The affirming and effective words of Pope Francis are reflected in the pages of the book.

  1. Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interest and concerns there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. It is not God’s will for us, nor is it the life in the spirit which has its source in the heart of the Risen Christ.
  2. Renewed encounter with God’s love, which blossoms into an enriching friendship, we are liberated from our narrowness and self absorption. We become fully human, when become more than human, when we let God bring us beyond ourselves in order to attain the fullest truth of our being.
In a world of bewilderment, consumerism, technology and media, where the absence of a vibrant spirituality can be sensed, and the vast majority are cocooned in comfort zones of security; there is a beacon call to cultivate deeply religious values like simplicity, hospitality, silence, a sense of sacredness, contemplation, process of openness of mind and heart, willingness, consciously being aware of the happenings, freedom to improve on the relationship and giving space for the growth and make them indigenous expressions of consecrated life. This can be cultivated through three Cs. Contemplation, Creativity and Courage, by reflecting on the realities, by being committed, by being rooted HERE and NOW and gain a deeper experience of God which can bring change and bear witness by living a life of higher goals.
A word of gratitude to CRI Dimapur for giving a chance to re-think, re-read, re-reflect and re-live the moments I spent with great personality

Aspiring to be Missionaries in the Service of God

Indeed we were delighted as we came together from different Congregations as one family to experience new things from each other on 3 November 2019 at Clare Bhavan, Kacharigaon. As FCC Congregation and Fr Benny SDB welcomed us with melodious song and words of welcome, we felt homely and overwhelmed with joy. We were helped and encouraged by the brothers and sisters to participate wholly and attentively through praise and worship.

We were extremely excited to listen to our resource person Fr Sabu Channeckal who inspired us in many ways through his talk. We were exhorted to go deep within ourselves and to build a close relationship with each other and to go forward in our Spiritual journey and to be more human.

Before confession Fr Sabu gave a brief talk about confession which helped some of us to get reconciled. We were so much taken up with these words “God listen to our sins once and throws it into a deep sea and never remember our sins again.” Lunch was delicious. We felt homely as Sisters had shown their love and concern for us. It also inspired some of us to imbibe this act if their life.

As we sat for the third session the sharing of one’s own vocation story we were inspired by their grounded vocation call from different background and how they have nurtured their own vocation. It has helped us to persevere and to be genuine in our vocation and to take up every challenge willingly and accept every situation as it shapes and moulds our life.

This gathering has brought a lot of blessing to all of us and we also suggest that it is good to have get together every year. We thank the programme organizer Rev Fr Benny SDB, the President CRI Dimapur Zone and all the members of organising team for giving us an opportunity to come and meet others those who are also aspiring to be missionaries in the service of God.

Every Saint has a Past and Every Sinner has a Future

The joy of being a candidate, preparing to enter in a religious life was the theme of Fr. Sabu Chenackal’s talk.

He said in order to be joyful first we need to have a personal touch with God through personal prayer which we would not give up even in times of trials difficulties and temptations. He also gave his own example about his personal prayer, saying that he prays one Our Father and seven Hail Marys which is very powerful for him.

He advised us to thank God constantly in any situation rather than grumbling over the reality by mentioning it (1Cor 15:10).

Taking examples of some successful persons in the society and in the Church he mentioned that it was the virtue of humility within them that led them to become successful persons in their lives. He also mentioned about a girl who left her religious vocation due to her ego and now she regrets for it. He advised us that proud nature will never be joyful but humility will make us forever joyful person. He said that humility and simplicity can make us the happiest person.

In order to persevere in our vocation we need to detach ourselves from our possessions such as money, talents and intellectual pursuit etc.

Peace and joy is the sign of a good religious. A person who doesn’t have peace within her/him can make the life of another person miserable.

He also spoke about the Sacrament of Reconciliation and stated that even though we confess our sins darkness is always following us. He spoke about evil, evil knows everything about our life, what we are going to become and our past life and with that he will disturb us discouraging us through our past weakness. He added saying that every saint has a past and every sinner has a future and through this statement he helped us to realize that in order to receive the Holy Spirit we need to repent of our sins. He reiterated that without the Holy Spirit we would not be able to live our vocation.

We were also inspired when he said that he goes to bed with a reconciled heart without any grudge feelings. We feel greatly privileged to have attended the programme which has enlightened us and have motivated us to be a better and a happy religious in the near future.

We also extend our special thanks to the CRI Dimapur Zone for organizing such a programme to enlighten the student candidates.

Hope in the life of religious

HOPE: It can be a special struggle for priests/religious because more often than not we do not see the tangible, immediate results of our work. A doctor can see the patient healed, even a plumber can see the leak fixed, but rarely do we see tangible immediate results of our work as priests.

Who knows how our sermons go over?Who knows if our words in the confessional helped?
Who knows if the marriages we have performed worked out?
Who knows if the kids we got ready for First Communion will even keep faith?
What do you do when you sit for hours in the confessional and no one comes hut the scrupulous person and the pious lady who was changing the alter linen?
What do you do when you get all excited preparing your presentation for the parents of the First communion children and all they really want to discuss is whether the girls will wear white veils and the boys sport coats?
What do you do when you are preparing a young couple for marriage and they are only interested in the wedding dress and the church decoration?

We trust that in some mysterious way the Lord is working through us even when we cannot see the effect.
• To trust that God is listening even when there is no response.
• To hope he is there when it seems he has abandoned us.
• To trust that our efforts at prayer are producing some invisible fruit when all visible signs of success are  not there.

• To hope that “wasting time with the Lord” is actually more productive than getting some practical  work accomplished.
• In the end what counts is not how many times we have succeeded or failed, but how we have begun again after a failure.

“There are no plains in our spiritual life, only hills and valleys and the way to growth in holiness is not to lose hope when in the valley,(F.Sheen)

BishopTimothy M. Dolan’s  first Lenten sermon when he was a priest.

President of Men’s association reminded him, “Father, you are supposed to give us an evening recollection in Lent”  He took the reminder seriously prepared for hours over three talks, but two men turned up. Just two men! He was crushed. But gave the talks all the same.
Twelve years later he visited a woman in the hospital, paralyzed, bedridden, her husband caring tenderly for her. Oh.” said the priest. “I admire the way you care for your wife.”
“Father, I’m just trying to be that Simon of Cyrene you talked about.”
“Yes, remember that Lenten evening recollection you gave, ‘Just as Simon helped Our Lord carry his cross, we do the same every time we help somebody carry theirs. I’m just trying to help Ramona carry hers”

The effect of a sermon twelve years later!”

Domestic Staff as Partners in the Mission of the Church

30 June 2019 was a memorable day for the Domestic Staff of various religious communities in Dimapur area, as the CRI of Dimapur Unit beautifully organised a day’s program in honour of them at St. Joseph University, Virgin Land, Dimapur. The day was something extra-ordinary for them as they set out of their daily routine which enabled them to mingle with various friends of theirs- sharing, playing, singing and praying together.
The gathering was warmly welcomed by Rev. Fr. Benny James SDB, the president of CRI and in his welcome speech he introduced the Resource Persons of the day . Then the sequence of events were highlighted by Rev. Sr. Agatha Phamnitin SABS and led them to Praise and Worship.

Rev. Sr. Pramila UFC, enlightened the staff on the topic- “Domestic Staff as Partners in the Mission of the Church”. She appreciated their service, encouraged and asked them to be more faithful in their works. To give them awareness, she introduced two party games namely first the Balloon games ( where they have to listen and act) and secondly, Team work ( the need to help each other). Meanwhile, Rev. Nurturing religious vocation

The CRI of Dimapur unit had organised a day programme for the Candidates of different religious institutions at Clare Bhavan Kacharigaon on 3 November 2019 from 9.45 am to 4:30 pm. It was a day of joy and gladness as the Candidates from around Dimapur gathered together for a get-together and to share the joy of being a Candidate Preparing to enter Religious Life.
The Programme began with a short prayer led by Rev. Fr. Benny James SDB the president of CRI Dimapur zone. Thereafter we were welcomed warmly with a welcome song by FCC candidates of Clare Bhavan followed by words of welcome by Fr. Benny James SDB wherein those accompanying the candidates were presented with small gifts.
The programme was beautifully chaired by Sr. Rang Dila Veronica FMA. Fr. Sabu Joseph Chenackal, the Director of Pastoral Centre, Dimapur, animated the group through his own personal life experiences and shared his deep experience of God. Through his talk father made us to delve deep into our own lives which was an eye opening for everyone of us. Father has elevated our spiritual life and has boosted us to greater heights by sharing his life’s stories and examples.

The praise and worship sessions conducted by two young energetic Salesian’s bothers Cl. Kadena Elow Mario and Cl. Kame Gaisinrei Elias helped to personalize our experience of God.
At 1:00 pm we had lunch which was delicious and well prepared with love. After the lunch one Candidate from each institution shared a short speech on the topic “The joy of being a Candidate in preparation for religious life”. It was an enriching experience hearing from our companions their vast and rich experience of God in their lives. The sharing has strengthened our vocation. The panel discussion cleared our doubts and fears and has set us on fire to work for God more zealously.
The Eucharistic celebration was meaningfully presided by Fr. Benny James SDB. The Gospel of the day was beautifully enacted by the candidates. There was an offertory procession in which one candidate from each congregation carried a symbol with a short prayer.

The photo session after mass has brought all of us together under the umbrella of God. The programme ended with tea. It was indeed a memorable day for all of us. We wholeheartedly thank and appreciate the CRI Unit of Dimapur under the leadership of Fr. Benny the president. Everything went off smoothly which had made a great impact on us. We pray that the CRI, Dimapur Zone flourish and conduct more of this kind of programme to encourage the young sprouting buds of the different institutions.
We feel proud and privileged to be part of CRI Dimapur zone who arranged this programme with outmost care, where everything was meticulously planned that we enjoy every bit of the programme. Once again ‘A Big Thank You’ to our CRI President Fr. Benny and all our Directors and Mistresses.

Hindrances versus longing to see jesus

A one day animation programme for the candidates in formation was organized by Dimapur Zone of CRI at St Clare Bhaven Convent Kacharigaon on 3rd November 2019.

The culmination of the programme was the Eucharistic celebration at St Leo’s Church, which is in the Convent campus itself. The main celebrant was Rev. Fr. Benny SDB, the President of CRI, Dimapur zone. He began the celebration with a short introduction highlighting the very purpose of religious life. He said that we should have joy and happiness within ourselves as we pursue our religious vocation. Unless we find joy in our vocation, the religious life too can become miserable.

The Gospel passage chosen for the day was Luke’s narration of Zacchaeus meeting Jesus and subsequent transformation of Zacchaeus. A skit highlighting the episode was presented by the SABS Candidates of Shanti Bhavan Convent. It was further interpreted by Rev. Fr. Benny in his homily. Pointing out the implications of the event in the gospel he said that there will be hindrances in our life too like in the life of Zacchaeus. In spite of his limitations he had a unique strength, that is, his longing to see Jesus. Similarly if we have a yearning for Jesus we will overcome our hurdles of life too like Zacchaeus. The gospel did sync well with the theme of the animation programme, “The joy of being a candidate in preparation for religious life.”
Another highlight of the Eucharist was the offertory in which each congregation presented a symbolic gift representing their aspirations, specific charism and vocation and offered prayers.
As the celebration came to an end, Bro. Dibyaranjan of St Vincent’s Seminary thanked the organizers and collaborators of the animation programme which was organized so well. The Eucharist was concluded with all the participants singing a jubilant hymn of praise to God.

Humility is the key to be happy religious candidate

One day animation program for the candidates (class xi & xii) of all religious congregations, organized by the regional CRI Dimapur unit on 24 October  2019, at Clare Bhavan Convent, Kacharigaon was a golden opportunity for us to come together as a group and to learn something new and practical, as we are beginning our life as candidates. Rev.Fr. Sabu Chenackal the main resource person brought our attention to the different aspects of religious life and the various ways in which we are expected to build up our lives in order to become joyful and responsible candidates. He highlighted on the importance of being humble. it is humility that makes us great and for that reason people appreciate us. He gave us some examples from the Bible to remind us that God prefers the most humble. (1 Cor:15: 9 – 10, Isaiah 14: 12- 15). Humility should be the strength in one’s own life.
Through this session we learned that to be joyful always as a candidate/religious:

  • One should not be succumbed by the thoughts of inheriting wealth and property and fame.
  • Not to be proud of our intelligence and we should not regret of our choice.
  • We must become persons of prayer: Personal prayer is very important and powerful. We can receive divine touch only through personal prayers.
  • Good and sincere confession gives peace and joy within us. To receive the Holy Spirit we need to confess regularly our sins. This point was made clear through relevant examples.
  • We need to get rid of our possessions and ego.
  • We need to respect and obey our elders.

As a whole the session on “the Joy of being a candidate preparing to enter Religious Life” has made us more alert and listening deeply and enable us to continue the life of a religious candidate. We have gained the knowledge about the various dimensions of religious life and encourage us to persevere in our CALL. Fr. Sabu’s talk was indeed very splendid and helpful to build up our life through personal prayer. Also, it urges us to be humble persons. Sharing of his life experiences and giving realistic examples were very enriching. In his closing session Fr. Sabu spoke passionately on the need to grow in personal prayer in order to be successful in our life as a Religious.
We thank God for this wonderful experience of coming together of all candidate of all different congregations. We are also grateful to the CRI Dimapur Unit  for the effort and hard work put into it, making  it a big success. Thanks to one and all who participated as well.

Email Efficiency

by Rocky

Weird Email Reply
I sent an email to the recipients of a particular email group. In a short while, I was surprised to get this short reply: “l received your email and thank you for the same. I shall reply to it as soon as possible.” The surprise is that the sender of the email is a priest who died a year ago. When I got over my shock, I realized that the email I received is an Auto-Reply he had set in his email account.

The How-to of Email
OFFICIAL EMAIL ID and personal email ID should be differentiated. The personal email ID should be used only for personal communication; and all the official communication should be through an official email ID, like Principal, Provincial, and so on. In the official email ID, one should not use the personal name in the ID or in the NAME while creating and or changing the email setting. Let us take, e,g.: Fr. Paul <provinciaI_mm@gmail.com>. Here Fr. Paul is the name of the provincial at the time of creating the email ID. So, it is better if the official email ID is ‘Fr. Provincial MM’. The official email ID should be used by the successors in the office; each successor should also change the password.

REPLY-TO for an email is set, only in case we need the reply to be sent to a different email ID other than the one we are using. Without knowing this, some of us have set the same email ID for reply-to as well. Unknowingly, many of us set a wrong ‘reply-to” email ID, may be with a spelling mistake; and later worry about not getting any reply for the email we sent, where the replies are either reaching elsewhere or nowhere.

SIGNATURE is set to be sent along with all the emails sent by us. It should not be too long or too big, that is, it should have the minimum necessary information about the sender. We should also remember not to repeat the same information at the end of our email when a signature is set, as it will be seen twice in an email.

AUTO RESPONSE or VACATION MAIL should be used:
(i) only for official email and surely not for personal email,
(ii) when we are away from the computer or email or internet connection, to keep the sender informed about the delay in responding, and (iii) not just as a greeting to all who send us email. This has to be set for only a particular span of time, that is, the last day should also be specified. We do mistake this setting as a signature and set only our signature in this vacation mail. Vacation mail should have the information, such as, the duration after which we would be able to reply.

FORWARDING option can be used to redirect our emails to another email ID for a specific reason and period, during vacation or any other official trip. Forwarding is also useful when we change our email ID to a new email ID; and still want to get the emails received in the old email ID to the new one.

FILTER can be set to move the emails you receive to respective folders including SPAM; and BLOCK option can be used to block emails from specific email IDs. which is already moved to the SPAM.

Email Maintenance
CHECK your email periodically, even if you are not receiving many emails, in order to avoid flooding of emails and accumulating it in the inbox. This will also help us in reading the emails and responding to it. whereas viewing too many emails at the same time in our inbox will decrease our interest in doing so.

SIGN OUT completely, especially when you are checking your email in a common computer, or someone else’s computer, or at a browsing center. It is always advisable to sign out or log out completely, once we finish using the email.

FOLDERS or LABELS can be created to categorize our email and store it for further usage. Having all the emails received in the inbox will not be helpful when we are searching for a particular (or set of) email.

PASSWORD for accessing email account should be easy to remember. Or it can also be noted down somewhere confidentially. It is recommended to change the password of the email account periodically— at least once in a month. The password of the official email ID should be changed along with the alternate / recovery email and the contact number, when a new person starts using the email.

CLEAR EMAILS periodically to create enough space for the new emails to be received. What we do not notice or escapes from our mind are the emails sent or received with attachments that occupy more space in our email server. Deleting those emails from our Sent, Spam and Trash or Bin, as well as the unwanted emails, will free more space at any given time.

Responses
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT to any email received can be sent with minimum necessary message and the date or duration for the full reply for the email. The acknowledgement should be sent individually, based on the email received and not an Auto-Reply option.

REPLY to each email is appropriate. Do not merely stop with an acknowledgement. The reply to each email should cover for all the points in the received email. While replying to an email, one should verify whether the reply is for the sender or for all in the recipient list; and the email should be marked accordingly using CC and BCC in the recipient list.

VIRUS ATTACK or HACKED email account should be handled properly in order to prevent further issues or problems like this. Most often we will not be able to identity whether our email account is affected by a virus or hacking. It can only be reported to us by the recipient of our email with some anonymous message, triggered automatically from our email account to all in our contact list. Once reported, you have to take the following cautious measures:

(1) Log-in to your email account and check the alternate/ recovery email ID and contact number set in it. If they are changed, provide your present and valid contact information. (As these could have been changed by the hacker, in order to receive the updating information and password to his/her contact).

Then, change your password.
– Delete all the sent emails that are triggered automatically after hacking or virus  attack.
– For the next one week, log-in to your email account; check the alternate / recovery   email ID and contact number; and change the password—everyday-
– Then you may continue to do the same once a week, until you are confident that your email account is hassle free.

OR

(2) Create a new email ID and set the forwarding option from the old email ID to the new.
–  Use only the new email ID; and reply to all the emails from it
–  You may also delete all the emails from the old email ID after sending the important emails to the new email ID.
